Ever wanted cool Japanese kitchenware such as a sashimi knife or cast iron pot to suite your culinary desire but had a hard time finding authentic items without breaking the bank? For those living in Los Angeles or even Southern California, your desperate search could end here.
Taiko Enterprises Corp., an importer and wholesaler of Japanese kitchenware, recently remodeled its store/showroom in Gardena, CA and began retailing service to general public. Over 700 items are displayed at the 18,000 square-foot space, from chopsticks, knives, pots & pans, dishes to professional cooking tools and sushi making robots. The store sells most items per piece and takes catalog orders for non-inventory products.
Taiko carries a wide range of professional hocho or Japanese knives; such brands as Masamoto, Masahiro and Sakai Takayuki, and stainless and ceramic knives for domestic use. The company also distributes Tanba ware, one of the most traditional styles of Japanese pottery with over 800-year history. The comprehensive catalog (29MB) lists the products they supply, some of which are for wholesale only or may be discontinued. So it is suggested that you contact the store and make sure they carry the item of your interest and how much it costs.
Taiko has been in wholesale business since 1990 and working mainly with the foodservice industry. In early 2016 the company relocated its headquarters from the second floor to the ground level of the same building and made the store available for public. The store welcomes walk-ins, but be aware that the place is not a Williams-Sonoma in a shopping mall. It is housed in a three-story commercial building and open weekdays only.
If you are a kind of the person obsessed with kitchen tools or who is dying to visit the Kappabashi kitchen town of Tokyo (learn more), you’ll find yourself being a kid in the candy store at the Taiko.
