A newly founded Japanese grocer Seiwa Market will open stores in Costa Mesa, CA and Houston, TX on April 1, 2016 and spring 2016 respectively. The Costa Mesa store replaced a former Fresh & Easy store on Harbor Boulevard.

Buzz has been out for a while with these reasons:
  • It is a new venture of former Marukai Market owner Hidejiro Matsu
  • Costa Mesa already hosts two Japanese grocers, Mitsuwa Marketplace and Tokyo Central (a part of Marukai group), so fierce competition is much anticipated. Indeed Tokyo Central is just a few blocks away from Seiwa on Harbor Boulevard.
  • Seiwa will be the first Japanese grocery store in Houston

Seiwa has launched a grand opening campaign for Costa Mesa store online and offline. It seems like their selling point is lower price just like Matsu successfully realized with Marukai.

A photo/video contest will run from April 1 to April 30 at Costa Mesa store. You will enter a chance to win $1000 gift card by posting a picture or video of the store on their Facebook Page. See here for detail.
